Spring Pub Quiz
This week, as I was saying has been all go go go! Incidentally, I have been sleeping as if sprinkled with magic sleepy dust....so heavily, and not moving an inch until the alarm buzzes. I have been going to sleep later than the usual 10/10.30 band, so that may be a factor. I love sleeping..it is definitely a part of the day that is always welcomed. So the weekend of the Pub Quiz began with Saturday. Meeting Sarah and introducing her to Tomi followed by a trip to Daiei to stock up on groceries then both of us meeting Josh and driving to meet everybody else who came to Otsuki for the second successfully attended YETI Pub Quiz! This time Michelle and Peter were the organisers and question masters, so thankfully Mhairi and I were able to play.
Okay I admit, I was actually cynical that anything that involved winners or losers could be of any fun. The presumed competitive nature of the night brought back memories of some psychologically scarring P.E. teachers who were undercover bullies or bouncers -their role being, to suck the pleasure out of any supposed-to-be fun activity. Kind of like 'Dementors'-that feature in Harry Potter.
I do like sport and would definitely have better memories of team sports had some of these 'adults' supervising the games, been, well, less 'competitive'. You know the situation: the 'cool' teachers-pets with equally big egos as their mentors, are told to pick the teams..who totally ignore this group of 'Other's' who are left overs? Yeh..me and my friends who were not a part of this clique were those.
I am proud to say that I would choose to be in this 'Others' category than part of that Cliquey bunch which seemed 'cool' in those days. These cliques of 'exclusives' who believe themselves to be 'popular', form everywhere I have noticed. In any organisation or society, you will get those who are the Tara-Palmers and the 'Others'.
I surveyed this concept of power-hungry P.E. Teachers, taking the idea of winning to the point that the sport and teamwork any aspect of fun. It seems I am not the only one...they torment us across international boundaries it seems.
Well, not a P.E. Teacher in sight, the evening was extremely fun. Our team consisted of a fun laid-back bunch of dudes who laughed enjoyed despite the moments of boggledom. The questions I helped to answer most [may be the the only round I was useful in] were of course the music ones.I did also enjoy the '3 clues' category too. Our team, who I suggested be called 'The Futons', managed to come third. The entry tickets plus a donation from Hiroshisan raised a fruity 71,000 yen for the Tsunami!
After most people had left to catch their trains conveniently opposite the restaurant, a few of us hung around, chatting and playing the piano. I was quite hungry so convinced everyone to go to Tomo-you know that Mexican-also owned by a Hiroshi. After yummy-cheesy-stuff, we drove home in the snow and talked. Well, it was more like a biology lesson: Michelle and I giving a detailed account to poor Josh about being a woman. The following morning the three of us discussed careers and analysed what jobs would suit each other.
